Gauging the effectiveness of your email campaigns beyond the first click can be achieved by tracking email recipients activity with Google analytics and Google's url builder. I use Joomla for all of my web sites as it is easy to install, maintain and the Joomla community is great in supporting other fellow developers in producing effective web sites. I will talk about creating a Google analytics account, installing the Joomla extension Bigshot google analytics (download from www.joomla.org) Google’s URL link builder offers the functionality to track links within an emails and or banner ads. The results of which can be viewed in your Google Analytics account (see how to set up an account here).
To create a link which is trackable then click here. Ultimately we are trying to get something which looks like this http://www.calalily.co.uk/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=webdesign Tool: Google's URL Builder 1) First enter in the landing page link url in this case www.calalily.co.uk 2) Now you need to decide what parameters you want to track, there are 5 options Source, Medium, Term, Content and Name. Source - can be where the link is placed e.g. email newsletter Medium - Email Term - Normally used in conjunction with Google adwords so leave this "blank" Content - use to diferentiate ads Campaign name - Some reference which you can use to segment your campaigns within google analytics http://www.calalily.co.uk/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=webdesign. This link was generated with the Sourse, Medium and Campaign name filled in, you do not have to fill in all of the fields. Note: If you want to track individuals then assign them a unique identifier which Google can track. Normally this will be generated by your email service provider software during the send out process. The activity of each individual recipient will then be displayed under the campaign content under AD Content which can be viewed by going to traffic sources and content.
