It is important to keep your Joomla CMS updated and the tool I use is Joomla Update manager
Updating your Joomla web site is made easy by Joomla update manager. I will talk through a step by step guide as to using the Update manager and also some possible errors.
Firstly download the update manager from www.joomla.org and search under extensions.
Once downloaded install via the extensions tab within Joomla, once loaded select components and then select Update manager.
Step 1 the welcome screen will show the following text

Step 2 select the file to download either full package or patch. The full package would be for an upgrade from 1.5.x to 1.6 a patch can be used when updating 1.5.x to 1.5.15
Top tip: check the parameters;- these need to be checked I used 1.5 Pear Archive_Tar as the extractor. An error occured when using the Default 1.5 extractor and 1.6 extractor. This fixed the error outlined below
